Beachin’ Day 3

“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.”

— David Orr, from Ecological Literacy: Education and the Transition to a Postmodern World (1992)

I just found this quote in my notes as I was laying out on the beach listening to Bob Marley.

I think Orr has hit on something important.

Success is often a one way street, pouring into a pool of personal gain. That kind of success has no place in the lives of the people God calls. Love and service change people and can create great change in our world. It also affects how people see God.

In a success-driven culture, I think we need to be hyper aware of what our brand of success says about the God we say we serve.
